Be Careful When You Change The Channel

per the usual, me and the boys were listening to the radio on our lovely morning commute (heavy sarcasm, correction, heaviest sarcasm - the commute into providence is worse than having your gums scraped with a rusty phillips head screwdriver that's been soaked in kerosene) and whilst (a word that should be used more IMHO)(could I use more parentheses?) we were listening to my favorite indy station in the isle of rhode, (Rhode Island for the neophytes reading) WRIU where the silky Nat King Cole was crooning.

I can dig the Colster. May I call him the Colster? Prolly not.

Anyhoo, WRIU decides to do a twofer of the Kinger (doesn't work either) so I thought before I get too much into the second song I'll check WHJY as I like their skits from Paul & Al.

So in less than a second I go from the uber-smooth timbre of Nat King Cole to the bleeding sandpaper scratch of David Lee Roth during Runnin' With The Devil.

Talk about a study in contrast.

No, that is an imperative. Right now! Get talking about a study in contrast.

Listen for yourselves.

Without Your Demons Kicking Me

I found myself driving home later than usual last night and in an  effort to hear something different on the radio I tried my independent station from the University of Rhode Island, WRIU, hoping to catch jazz or perhaps bluegrass.

Alas, it was a "country" block. Usually I would turn the station as I'm not a fan.

But when you hear a voice, so beautifully lush with despair and authenticity, you don't turn the fucking channel.

I didn't.

When the song was over I sat in the car in darkness and went to itunes and gobbled it up.

BTW, I know this will be sold under a country label genre but, a la George Carlin, it's all blues music.

Carlin:

I'll tell you a little secret about the blues. It's not enough to know which notes to play, you have to know why they need to be played.

Suzanne Santo knows why they need to be played.

Merry Xmas

Hola Amigos, I know it's been a while since I wrapped at ya but I've been really busy hanging out with Jim Anchower.

Anyhoo, while listening to one of my favorite radio stations, WRIU, in the Isle of Rhode, I heard this gem. I gravitate to the song because it reminds me of the zany holidays from my youth and the sense of fun that seems to somehow seep through dysfunction...the story of my youth.

Few things are sublime. The word is overused. This is sublime.

P.S., here is a pic of my friend Jim Anchower:

Rachael Price - "Skylark" [Studio Version]

Some mornings something sublime is given to you. This morning on a more than usual god-awful commute up 95 north in the ocean state something sublime was given to me. Now one has to do more than a little bit of searching these days to find jazz on FM radio. Upon moving to RI, I found such
an FM station in WRIU. With programs like Bill Melone’s Swing Shift and Friday’s morning program with the ‘Eggman’ for “those tunes that have fallen through the cracks” I have enjoyed music I can’t really hear anywhere else on the radio. On this particular morning, doing songs
from Johnny Mercer, the beautiful song,  Skylark was played.

Not only was it played, but this sparse, haunting version from Rachel Price was
presented to me…and I gratefully embraced it. Sublime.
